چکیده
Almost two in 10 adults the U.S. and Europe are, at any moment time, diagnosed with a mental illness. This paper asks whether illness is over- (or under-) diagnosed, by looking its causal effect on individuals margin of diagnosis. We follow all Swedish men born between 1971 1983 matched to administrative panel data health, labor market, wealth family outcomes estimate impact diagnosis subsequent outcomes. Exploiting random assignment 18-year-old doctors during military conscription, we find that for people increases future likelihood death, hospital admittance, being sick from work, unemployment, while lowering probability married. Using separate identification strategy, measure service same set rule out our setting primarily mediated altering serving. Our findings are consistent potential over-diagnosis

Effects of Juvenile Incarceration: Evidence from Randomly-Assigned Judges
Approximately 100,000 youths are currently incarcerated in the US, yet little is known whether such a penalty deters future crime or interrupts human capital formation in a way that increases the likelihood of later criminal behavior. This paper uses the incarceration tendency of randomly-assigned judges as an instrumental variable to estimate causal effects of juvenile incarceration on adult r...

We investigate how group boundaries, and the economic environment surrounding groups, affect altruistic cooperation and punishment behavior. Our study uses experiments conducted with 525 officers in the Swiss Army, and exploits random assignment to platoons. We find that, without competition between groups, individuals are more prone to cooperate altruistically in a prisoner’s dilemma game with...
متن کاملMitigating the Effects of Low Birth Weight: Evidence from Randomly Assigned Adoptees*
Infants who are underweight at birth earn less, score lower on tests, and become less educated as adults. Previous studies have found mixed evidence that socioeconomic status mitigates these effects. In this paper, we reconcile these findings using a unique dataset in which adoptees were quasi-randomly assigned to families. We find that median income within a zip code mitigates the effects of l...

Obesity among children is an important public health concern, and social networks may play a role in students' habits that increase the likelihood of being overweight. We examine data from South Korean middle schools, where students are randomly assigned to classrooms, and exploit the variation in peer body mass index. We use the number of peers' siblings as an instrument to account for endogen...
